ITUC’s #timefor8 campaign galvanised trade unions into action at UN SDG high-level week

The latest edition of the #timefor8 campaign mobilised trade unions from across the world to express their support for a New Social Contract during the 2020 edition of the United Nations’ High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development which took place on 7-16 July.

Trade unions from all continents showed their strong commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and stressed the central role that SDG 8 plays as a driver of the 2030 Agenda and as a corner stone of the New Social Contract for recovery and resilience in the face of the crisis.

Many workers also joined the call to testify on the negative impacts that the pandemic and the subsequent preventive measure imposed on populations had had on them and their livelihoods.

For trade unions, a New Social Contract that provides universal social protection, decent work, labour rights, inclusive growth and Just Transition for all is key to rebuild our workplaces, recover from the ongoing crisis and build resilience for future ones. In light of this, the ITUC organised a high-level side event during which it presented the flagship report SDG Decade of Action – Trade Union Policy Response, which includes the analysis of its SDG 8 Monitor based on data gathered from 152 countries across the world.
