Trade unions voice their concerns about the Joint Africa-EU Strategy

The Joint Africa-EU Task Force met in Brussels on 8-9 March 2012. In preparation to the meeting ITUC and ETUC highlighted the concerns of trade unions from both continents in a letter to the EU Commissioner on Development, Andris Piebalgs. In respect to the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES) trade unions stress the importance of the Decent Work Agenda, which is recognized in other EC’s development documents, in particular the Agenda for Change, but still missing in the priorities of JAES. Other concerns include the need for EU’s policy coherence, more synergies between the existing partnerships as well as a rights-based approach to the issue of migration, especially in relation to safeguarding migrant workers’ rights.
