Latin America-European Union Trade Union Declaration Discussed With Spanish Government
Trade unions from Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union (LAC-EU) are today presenting their joint statement to Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, representing the Spanish government hosting the LAC-EU Heads of State Summit that will take place on 18 May 2010.
New “Roadmap” to Boost Action on Child Labour
The ITUC has welcomed the adoption of a new child labour “Roadmap” at an international conference in the Dutch capital The Hague this week, which will give a new push to reach a target set by the International Labour Organisation to eliminate the worst forms of child labour by 2016.
Swaziland: Trade Unionist Dies in Custody
The ITUC joins the ITUC-Africa and its affiliates in its strongest denunciation of the suspicious death in custody of Sipho Jele, member of the Swaziland Agriculture and Plantation Workers’ Union (SAPWU) and the People’s United Demoractic Movement (PUDEMO), Swaziland’s largest opposition party, which was banned and is being relentlessly persecuted under the government’s notorious Suppression of Terrorism Act. Swaziland has been living under a State of Emergency since 1973.
Colombia: Education Sector Prey to Constant Threats and Assassinations
Violence is reaching a peak in Colombia. Since 28 January of this year, no fewer than four teachers affiliated to the teachers’ association of Cordoba, ADEMACOR, have been assassinated in the Department of Cordoba. The ITUC, together with its Colombian affiliates, CUT, CGT and CTC, have strongly denounced and condemned these murders as well as the constant threats against the leaders and headquarters of the teachers’ association of Antioquia, ADIDA.
Iran: Execution of a Trade Unionist
The ITUC is deeply shocked and has strongly condemned the recent execution of the teacher and trade unionist Farzad Kamangar, together with four other prisoners on Sunday 9 May. According to the information received by the ITUC, Farzad Kamangar was sentenced after a court process that did not meet international or Iranian standards for a fair trial.
