The Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA), which represents more than 55 million workers on the continent and is the International Trade Union Confederation’s (ITUC) regional organisation for the Americas, totally rejects and condemns the decision of the Trump government to include Cuba on the list of states that sponsor terrorism.

The announcement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on 11 January 2021, in the final days of the Trump government, represents yet another attack on democracy led by the Trump administration.

Policies of terror are those pursued by Donald Trump himself, by refusing to recognise the results of the elections, spreading disinformation or ‘fake news’ and inciting his followers to carry out violent actions, such as the armed invasion of the Capitol, the seat of the US Congress, in a show of total disregard for democratic institutions and processes.

The TUCA strongly condemns this decision and rejects any kind of embargo or sanctions against the Cuban government. It also expresses its solidarity with the Cuban people, the Cuban workers’ organisation, the CTC, and Cuban social organisations and movements, in the face of a move that further intensifies the crisis generated by decades of sanctions and attacks on the island’s government.
