Norway: An Attack Against Democracy

The ITUC expresses its shock and solidarity with the Norwegian people following the bombings in central Oslo and the shootings at the island Utøya outside Oslo.

The media have reported 7 dead in Oslo, at least 84 dead at Utøya and many people injured.

"These events are tragic for the people of Norway. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of all those who lost their lives and those who have been touched by this tragedy," said Sharan Burrow, general secretary of the ITUC.

All the children and young people at Utøya were participating in a camp lead by the country’s ruling Labour Party.

"To systematically target a group of young people who want to make the world a better place is so shocking we cannot even begin to understand. It is more important than ever that we continue to express our commitment to democracy, openness and solidarity. We must all stand against violence and extremism everywhere,” added Sharan Burrow.

The ITUC restates its commitment to stand against violence and extremism everywhere.
