ITUC General Council: Luc Triangle declared sole candidate for ITUC General Secretary

The 32nd ITUC General Council meeting, held by video on 7 September, confirmed that Luc Triangle will be the sole candidate for the position of ITUC General Secretary at the extraordinary ITUC World Congress to be held on 12 October.

Luc Triangle, currently the ITUC’s Acting General Secretary, received multiple nominations from affiliates in each region by the deadline with no other candidate nominated.

“I am honoured to have received this support and look forward to putting forward my candidacy formally at the Congress. Working people need a strong ITUC and the unity shown in all the General Council’s discussions shows how committed our member organisations are to ensure that strength,” said Luc Triangle, whose candidate manifesto can be read here.

Other key points in the Council’s discussions included a review of trade union engagement with the BRICS processes, and the L20 trade union counterpart to the G20, particularly in view of the exclusion of L20 unions during the Indian G20 Presidency. The Modi government tried and failed to sideline the L20 in favour of its allies in the Hindu nationalist labour front.

The Council received an update on efforts to unblock the impasse at the ILO on the right to strike through a referral to the International Court of Justice, and established a working group to review ITUC affiliation fee bands, which reflect the different levels of national economic development, and related issues.

The next meeting of the General Council will take place in Brussels, 12-14 December.
