Antônio de Lisboa Amâncio Vale was elected as Deputy President of the ITUC at its Fifth World Congress in Melbourne, Australia, November 2022.
Antônio is from Brazil, where he is the International Relations Secretary of the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT-Brazil).
A teacher of geography and history by profession, he has served in senior positions at the National Confederation of Education Workers (Confederação Nacional dos Trabalhadores em Educação).
The child of farmers, his father, Agostinho, was the founder of the Union of Rural Workers in the municipality of Tauá.
Aged 12, he moved to Brasília to work during the day to support his family and studied at night. In the final years of the dictatorship, he participated in the reorganisation of the student movement.
From 2001 to 2009, he led the Union of Teachers of the Federal District during the biggest strikes in its history.
Since 2014 he has served as a Worker Member of the ILO Governing Body.
