New Social Contract

ITUC Newsletter – June 2023

Luc Triangle, ITUC Acting General Secretary

June is a major month for international trade union action, with key moments throughout the month. We will launch the tenth edition of the ITUC’s flagship publication, the 2023 ITUC Global Rights Index, on 30 June with a webinar to highlight the results on that day. You can register here.

At the International Labour Conference, 5 – 15 June, we will hold governments to account over compliance with international labour standards, with specific agenda items on apprenticeships, just transition and labour protection. At the same time, at the 2023 UN Climate Conference we will call for governments to accelerate and deepen just transition to tackle the climate crisis.

The ITUC General Council will meet on 11 June to set out the process for electing a new ITUC General Secretary at the Extraordinary ITUC World Congress later in the year. The General Council is also expected to adopt an Integrity and Anti-Corruption Policy and Code of Conduct, as well as new rules governing the conduct of the General Secretary election and will receive an update on progress on new financial rules and procedures. Prior to this, the ITUC Executive Bureau will meet virtually on 30 May.

The day after the General Council, it is the World Day Against Child Labour when unions and allies around the world will continue to push for all children to be in school and for laws against child labour to be strengthened and fully implemented.

Other significant days coming up are International Domestic Workers’ Day, 16 June, World Refugee Day, 20 June, the ILO World of Work Summit during the ILO Conference, 17 – 18 June, focusing on social justice and the 21 June marks the 4th anniversary of the adoption of the ILO Violence and Harassment Convention 190.

In solidarity,

Luc Triangle
ITUC Acting General Secretary
