New Social Contract

ITUC Newsletter – May 2023

Luc Triangle, ITUC Acting General Secretary

First of all, I’d like to express my appreciation to the ITUC Presidential team and General Council for having the confidence in me to lead the ITUC as Acting General Secretary up to the Extraordinary ITUC World Congress at the end of September, when the new ITUC General Secretary will be elected.

The past few months have been extremely challenging and difficult for all of us, and I want to reassure you that my commitment will be complete to the ITUC, its staff, its 340 member organisations and the 200 million workers we represent. In the following months, these values will be central for us all: integrity; transparency; internal democracy; and rebuilding trust, confidence and unity. These values are at the heart of what the ITUC stands for.

This is an important time for the ITUC, with a full agenda over the coming months and, of course, the preparations for the Congress. The next key step in that process will be the meeting of the ITUC General Council, 11 June in Geneva. The Executive Bureau will also meet, 30 May.

Also this month, we will be marking the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia,17 May, the ETUC Congress and the G7 Summit in Japan. With TUAC and G7 affiliates we have already made important contributions to the G7 Labour and Employment Ministers’ meeting.

We will be taking the demand of working people for a new social contract to the ILO International Labour Conference, 5 – 16 June. As well as the Committee on the Application of Standards, there will be important discussions on social (labour) protection, quality apprenticeships and Just Transition and gender equality at work.

Look out this month for the launch of the #TimeFor8 campaign, which aims to create momentum for decent work and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Your active engagement in this campaign will help spread the message and turn the words of the SGDs into action.

I look forward to working with you in the coming months. I count on your continuous engagement in our activities for a strong, powerful and united ITUC.

In solidarity,

Luc Triangle
ITUC Acting General Secretary
