Guatemala: Killings of Trade Union Activists Continue in Guatemala
Yet another trade union leader has been brutally murdered in Guatemala for exercising his union activities. The ITUC and its affiliated organisations in Guatemala, the CUSG, CGTG and UNSITRAGUA, have firmly condemned the assassination of Idar Joel Hernández Godoy, finance secretary of the Izabal banana workers’ union SITRABI, affiliated to the CUSG.

The UN Human Rights Council should adopt “Guiding Principles” on business and human rights, as set out in a report from UN Special Representative John Ruggie, at its meeting beginning on Monday in Geneva.
Trade Unions at the Top of the World
A member of Nepal’s Sherpa trade union, Dorje Khatri, yesterday planted the ITUC flag on the summit of Mount Everest, symbolising the trade union commitment to protecting the planet from climate change. Sherpa Dorje and his team placed the flag at 06.30 on 26 May and are now descending from the peak.
Embassy Protest Against Bahrain’s Anti-Union Repression
A protest delivered to the Bahrain Embassy in Brussels today by international, European and Belgian trade union organisations calls on the authorities in the Gulf state to stop their violent campaign against the country’s trade union movement, to reinstate over 1,000 workers sacked and to drop false charges against union leaders, journalists and human rights defenders.
New IMF Head Must Give Priority to Jobs and Reducing Inequalities, Unions Say
The incoming head of the IMF must have the capacity and will to tackle the global employment crisis and growing inequality, according to the ITUC. At least two candidates have so far announced interest in replacing Dominique Strauss-Kahn as IMF Managing Director.
