Policies Key trade union messages on the
new proposal of the EU Development Cooperation Instrument
In
response to EC Proposal for a Regulation establishing a financing instrument
for development cooperation (DCI) ITUC and ETUC have formulated the Key trade
union messages on DCI, outlining the trade union perspective on the text of
the proposed regulation. Most important asks concern the need for an
actor-based approach as well as more support to the Decent Work Agenda and
social partners at country level. Policies Trade unions voice their concerns about the
Joint Africa-EU Strategy
The
Joint Africa-EU Task Force met in Brussels on 8-9 March 2012. In preparation
to the meeting ITUC and ETUC highlighted the concerns of trade unions from
both continents in a letter to the EU Commissioner on Development, Andris Piebalgs. In respect to
the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES) trade unions stress the importance of the
Decent Work Agenda, which is recognized in other EC’s development documents,
in particular the Agenda for Change, but still missing in the priorities of
JAES. Other concerns include the need for EU’s policy coherence, more
synergies between the existing partnerships as well as a rights-based
approach to the issue of migration, especially in relation to safeguarding
migrant workers’ rights. Policies Trade unions on the move for
Rio+20
With
just 4 months to RIO+20 the ITUC is calling on all affiliates to mobilize for
a more equitable, just and sustainable world. Visit the new page of the ITUC
campaign for Rio+20. Policies EU’s aid to Haiti – no progress without Decent
Work
The
lack of recognition of the international labour standards and the right to
social protection is one of the reasons for the perpetuation of extreme
poverty in Haiti. Despite continuous efforts of ITUC, ETUC and Haitian trade
unions, EU’s aid programmes for the country still make no mention of the
Decent Work Agenda among their priorities or principles. In a letter to EU
Development Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, trade unions remind that without Decent Work
principles at the core, the efforts for reconstruction and development of
Haiti will not succeed. In their Roadmap, formulated in April 2010, trade
unions present in detail their perspective on the necessary prerequisites for
Haiti’s reconstruction. News from the Network Launch of the TUDCN gender mapping
The
third TUDCN Development Paper maps the integration of the gender perspective
in trade union development cooperation. News from the Network Canadian
trade union development cooperation in three stories
Strengthening
trade unions in Zimbabwe, leadership training in Bolivia, empowering women in
Bangladesh – these only some examples of the international solidarity
projects of the Canadian Labour Congress and its affiliates. In three more
in-depth stories from India, Mexico and Kenya you can learn more about the
reality of trade union struggles around the world and the Canadian
development cooperation projects supporting them. News from the Network Colombian trade unions and human rights
organisations meet in Bogotá to unveil action against impunity
Since
the 1950s, defending human rights in Colombia via a trade union organisation
has been an extremely risky activity. Even more shocking is the fact that the
majority of crimes and other attacks – both physical and mental – against
trade unions and trade unionists and their families remain undocumented and
as such have never gone to court or been punished. The work of Colombian
trade unionists is fraught with danger and their activities are generally
deemed so worthless that decent work in the field is extremely hard to come
by. News from the Network International seminar on the opportunities and
challenges associated with labour migration in Peru
At a
seminar held in Lima on 13 January 2012, ISCOD-Peru brought together several
different national institutions to analyse the progress made in terms of social
dialogue around labour immigration via the 2008-2011 AECID-ISCOD Cooperation
Agreement. News from the Network OISS and INSHT analyse the link
between informal labour and the rate of occupational accidents in Latin
America
Within
the framework of the Latin American Occupational Health & Safety
Strategy, the Latin American Organisation for Health & Safety and the Spanish
government’s Institute for Safety and Hygiene at Work (INSHT) brought out a
publication entitled "Una mirada
a las condiciones de trabajo de algunos colectivos especialmente vulnerables" (An overview of the working conditions
of certain particularly vulnerables categories of
workers). News from the Network Teachers’ Forum meeting in Marrakech calls for
rural education to be made a national priority for Morocco
Over
250 rural teachers met in Marrakech from 13-15 January 2012 to attend the
First Rural Teachers’ Forum in a bid to remedy the serious shortcomings in
public education in rural areas of the country. The event was organised by
Morocco’s National Teachers’ Union (SNE) within the Democratic Labour
Federation (FDT) and focussed on the topic "Development and improvement
of public education in rural areas means motivating teachers and improving
their conditions". News from the platforms BetterAid Updates: What's Next After Busan?
The
Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness was one of the high points of
the long advocacy of civil society to promote development effectiveness. CSOs participated in the
negotiations of the Busan Outcome Document,
co-organized official thematic sessions, prepared mini-debates in the
Knowledge and Innovation Space, and lobbied in the corridors of the Bexco Convention Center. Now,
instead of pausing for a break, civil society celebrated their success in the
HLF-4 by sustaining the momentum gained in Busan.
