Towards the UN Development Cooperation Forum 2012

Appreciated and encouraged by the High Level Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly in September 2010 for the work on the promotion of mutual accountability and aid transparency as well as setting basis for the debate on policy coherence and South-South cooperation, the UN Development Cooperation Forum (UN DCF) continues fulfilling its mandate with new perspectives and challenges ahead.

Upon the suggestions of some of the delegations, the UN DCF might in the future become the main international forum for exchange and debate on international development, development cooperation policies and related issues. The idea is supported also by the BetterAid CSO platform, which urges the UN DCF not only to take on a leading role in the debate, but also to address a series of issues, listed in the CSO Statement on the DCF Strategy: 2010 – 2012: crucial time for the UN Development Cooperation Forum to become the main global forum for development (April 2011).

The preparations for the next UN DCF meeting in 2012 include three High-Level Symposia, the first of which was held in May this year in Mali under a theme: Gearing development cooperation towards the MDGs: effectiveness and results. The discussions at the Symposium focused around well allocated, delivered and managed aid as a tool for poverty reduction, with a particular attention to the issues of inclusive national ownership, mutual accountability and impact measurement for ensuring political support.

The next High-Level Symposium will take place in Luxembourg on October 18-19 2011 on the topic Working together to increase the development impact of aid.
