WDDW 2009 - Get the world to work (call to action)

Call to Action

Get the World to Work

World Day for Decent Work, October 7 2009

The economic crisis threatens the jobs and futures of people everywhere. Decades of deregulation, and the greed and excess of a tiny minority, have pushed the world into the deepest recession since the 1930s. Decent work must be at the centre of government actions to bring back economic growth and build a new global economy that puts people first.

We are united in our demands for a new global economy, which is built on social justice and which:

• Delivers decent work, with full respect for trade union rights, to all;

• Is based on effective, democratic and accountable global governance
which puts the needs of people first;
• Ensures strong financial regulation, putting finance at the service of the real economy and the real economy at the service of people;
• Guarantees respect for the rights of all working people and puts an end to poverty, inequality, discrimination and exploitation; and,
• Secures sustainability though green investment and green jobs.

We call upon you to join with the International Trade Union Confederation in the campaign for economic recovery and reform on the World Day for Decent Work on 7 October 2009.
