Show your solidarity with the people of Hong Kong on Monday 2 September, lunchtime, in the European Quarter.

Police brutality has escalated and the right to freedom of assembly has been seriously infringed. This is in breach of ICCPR to which Hong Kong is a signatory party, and the UN Basic Principles on the Use of Forces and Forearms by Law Enforcement Officers. Excessive force has been deployed against peaceful protesters with more than 500 youth and students taking part in peaceful rallies – as well as some bystanders - arrested since June, the youngest of which is only 13 years old. Using a fabricated definition of rioting, they could face 5-14 years of imprisonment.

In solidarity with our colleagues in the Hong Kong trade union movement who will be striking on 2-3 September, the ITUC, along with other organisations, will demonstrate at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. We will carry the trade union demands for freedom of assembly and free speech; the release of arrested protestors and an independent inquiry into human rights abuses by police.
