#Timefor8 - The clock is ticking for a New Social Contract with SDG8 at its core

The world was already off-track to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before the Covid-19 pandemic arrived, disrupted the global economy, and laid bare the current global economic model’s incapacity to handle a global health and economic crisis. Today more than ever, building a New Social Contract with SDG 8 - on decent work and sustainable economic growth - at its core is key to rebuild our societies and workplaces.

Background notes

In the wake of the pandemic, the vision of a world that leaves no one behind is a far cry from reality. The Covid-19 crisis has had global consequences on the income and livelihoods of workers around the world. Workers are facing increasing occupational safety and health risks; jobs are being suppressed worldwide and precariousness is growing. Informal economy workers have been especially affected as lockdown measures are challenging their livelihoods and they remain largely uncovered by social protection systems and lack access to health care. Workers’ rights have been further repressed under the pretext of recovery from the pandemic with labour abuses, discrimination, and draconian changes in labour laws.

In light of this dreadful global situation, workers and trade unions from around the world are united in this global joint call: We want a New Social Contract with SDG 8 at its core!
