Kofi Annan: A Giant of International Diplomacy

The ITUC deeply mourns the passing of Kofi Annan, distinguished former Secretary-General of the United Nations and a giant of international diplomacy.

“Kofi Annan dedicated his life to the service of those most in need, throughout more than 40 years in the UN system. He was tireless in his quest for peace, development, justice and human rights, and richly deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, which he was awarded in 2001. He remained a passionate and committed advocate for international dialogue and for averting conflict after the end of his time at the helm of the UN in 2006, as Chair of The Elders group of global leaders. We have lost a man of true compassion, and selfless dedication to a world where all can live in dignity and security, and who steered the United Nations through some of its most challenging years. The international trade union movement pays tribute to his memory and to his outstanding legacy,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow.
