Rich pickings - How trade and investment keep the Burmese junta alive and kicking

This report will look at the linkages between the political and the socio-economic
situations in the country. It will endeavour to show how Burma’s rulers are reaping the economy’s profits while its population is suffering ever-greater poverty. It will uncover how Burma’s neighbours are pursuing an increasing number of their economic and political interests through shameless cooperation with and support for the military regime. And finally it will call for further sanctions on the military junta and for disinvestment from the country. It would be best if neighbouring countries changed their policies towards the unelected rulers of Burma, severing their economic relations too, but as there is little sign that they will do so, this analysis calls for financial sanctions to be imposed by other parts of the world.
