South Korea: ITUC calls for respect for democracy and rule of law

The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) condemns the attempt to impose martial law in South Korea and demands the full restoration of, and respect for democracy.

President Yoon Suk Yeol made the declaration, placing sweeping powers in the hands of the military and suspending democratic institutions. However, he was forced to reverse his decision following a vote in parliament.

ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle stated: “This declaration of martial law by President Yoon was an unacceptable attack on democracy, and on the people of South Korea and their hard-won rights. It was a clear attempt to silence the dissenting voices crucial to a vibrant democracy, but after freeing themselves from past military regimes, the people of South Korea know very well how precious democracy is and that it must be defended.

“The ITUC stands in solidarity with our affiliated unions and the people of South Korea. We demand respect for the rule of law, protection of basic rights and freedoms, and the full restoration of democracy and democratic institutions.

“There is no compromise. Democracy and the rights of all citizens must be respected. Then, trade unions and other civil society groups must be involved to chart a path forward for South Korea out of the unprecedented crisis.”
