Building Workers' Power
ITUC Newsletter December 2019

Coming up this month – Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary

As the eyes of the world are on Madrid for the COP25, we continue to stand with our sisters and brothers who are rejecting broken neoliberalism across Chile and Latin America. Social and environmental movements are increasingly acting together. The transformative model we need to ensure decent jobs on a living planet is carried in our Just Transition demands. Spain is on the verge of leading by example, and Madrid can be the stage of real progress and commitments for all countries.

Amazon continues to wreak havoc for its workforce, build its monopoly empire, fuel the climate crisis, abuse people’s privacy and dodge its tax responsibilities. Over the past two days we have convened those workers who are leading the struggle to address this increasingly unaccountable behaviour – together with policymakers, consumer groups and digital rights groups – at the Amazon Symposium. This is the start of something big. A major change is on the horizon, for Amazon certainly, but also for how we collectively address these same components of corporate greed that we see increasingly replicated elsewhere.

As the year comes to a close, we will be taking stock of a busy year of action. The ILO Centenary delivered both a strong Centenary Declaration and the historic Convention 190 on Violence and Harassment. Our demand for a New Social Contract is gaining traction, and I am truly inspired by the #RatifyC190 ratification campaigns that women are leading in so many countries, and which we saw highlighted at the recent ITUC Africa Congress.
