Thursday, 19th July 2012 will remain memorable to Kenyan domestic workers as a day they left their daily duties and matched to Parliament to demand for the ratification of Convention 189 in Kenya.

A group of 100 domestic workers led by the Secretary General of KUDHEIHA Workers Bro. Albert Njeru together with Union officials and staff commenced their procession from the Union office at 10:30 am. Bro. Harrison Kiriro of Solidarity Centre was also present in Solidarity with KUDHEIHA.

The domestic workers chatted and danced songs on the provisions of the Convention. They sang their favorite song “Domestic Workers have a Convention”. The streets of Nairobi came to a standstill as people seemed to be shocked that domestic workers can actually organize themselves in such a big multitude. The participants shared with the public pamphlets and various literatures on domestic workers rights.
Most media houses including popular TV, radio stations and Newspaper houses were present eager not to miss this occasion. Domestic workers fighting for their rights in Kenya became the prime time news.

The main aim of the procession was to acknowledge the first anniversary since the adoption of the convention at the ILC of 2011 by presenting a petition to parliament justifying its ratification in Kenya. They had prepared a memorandum for presentation which explained how the provisions of C189 will fit into the Kenyan agenda of Decent work for all. They seeked to convince the law makers that there is no other document with more applicable provisions to domestic workers more than C189.

The petition went further to quote various findings and research work done by KUDHEIHA Workers in the past last year. Moreover, the procession passed through Harambee Avenue which apart from being in the Central Business District it also meant that the domestic workers will pass right in front of the Prime Minister’s and the president’s office.
