ITUC Condemns Terrorist Atrocity in Turkey

The ITUC has condemned the terrorist atrocity in Turkey which has taken the lives of at least 86 people and injured 186 others. Two bombs exploded during a peace rally in Ankara organised by Turkish trade unions and other civil society groups.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, “Our thoughts are first and foremost with the families of those who lost their lives to this atrocity and with those who have been injured. This attack on the very fabric of civil society was aimed at intimidating and silencing ordinary peace-loving people. The ITUC extends its full solidarity to our Turkish affiliates, who have consistently and fearlessly worked towards peace, democracy and rights for all.”

Two explosions, apparently from suicide bombers, took place in quick succession. The Turkish authorities have been heavily criticised for the actions of security forces, which blocked access to medical services for the victims, and used teargas to disperse the peaceful demonstration.

“We demand a full, transparent and independent investigation into all the circumstances of the attack and its aftermath,” Burrow said, speaking from Sao Paolo where the ITUC is holding its annual General Council meeting.
