Georgia: trade unions calls for more international solidarity

In Georgia, organising workers and ensuring the respect of their rights remains a big challenge. Merab Chijavadje is inspector and organiser at the Georgian Seafarers’ Union. The union helps workers in many ways, particularly women workers, by providing them with support to obtain for medical treatment or legal assistance. It is also constantly alerting the media about abuses at factory level. However, Merab acknowledges that international solidarity is decisive to guarantee substantial progress in the EPZ. Most cases raised by the workers in the courts do not progress. In Georgia, the laws need to be changed and the regulations need to be enforced. Impunity in cases of non-respect of workers’ rights is one of the main problems.
