Coming up this month – Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary
The ILO Conference in June will debate an ILO Centenary Declaration with the ambition to agree on a renewed social contract, building on the mandate of the ILO established in its Constitution in 1919 and reinforced in the Philadelphia Declaration, with an abiding commitment to social justice and the principle that “labour is not a commodity”.
This requires a floor of a universal labour guarantee for all workers, with fundamental rights including occupational health and safety as well as minimum living wages and control over working time.
We are also confident we will achieve the finalisation of an historic convention to end violence and harassment at work. However, we need all affiliates to lobby their governments to secure the commitment to an inclusive Declaration and a strong set of global rules.
The ILO Committee on Application of Standards will consider some of the world’s worst cases of violations of labour rights, and the 2019 ITUC Global Rights Index will be launched on Wednesday 19th June, naming the ten worst countries in the world for working people.
