#Timefor8: the clock is ticking for a New Social Contract         Issue 4 / 2022 -  Sign Up

Dear,

It is clear that corporate greed is a serious obstacle to achieving the SDGs by 2030. It feeds global inequality, concentrating wealth in the pockets of a few at the expense of the environmental, social and labour rights of the many.

Workers and their communities in poor developing countries are the hardest hit. Corporate greed imprisons them in poverty and illness, along with depriving their country of important tax revenues that could be invested in sustainable recovery and resilience.

In six weeks, we will bring forward workers’ demand for ending corporate greed and ensuring secure workplaces where rights are respected to decision-makers and stakeholders meeting at the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

At the HLPF, we will bring to the discussion the six demands that workers have for a New Social Contract with SDG 8 at its core, rooted in a gender-transformative agenda:  (1) decent, climate-friendly jobs with just transition; (2) rights for all workers; (3) minimum living wages; (4) universal social protection for all; (5) equality to end all discrimination; and (6) inclusion to ensure the empowerment of developing countries.

The UN has called for a decisive commitment from all stakeholders in this decade of action to deliver the SDGs. And we underline that ending corporate greed is a must to unleash the world’s development potential until 2030 and beyond.

At the HLPF, we will stress that:

corporations must be held to account by mandated due diligence, including grievance procedures to effect remedy for violations;

✔ labour rights, including the implementation of labour protection floors for all workers, must be part and parcel of recovery strategies; and

governments and employers must adopt and implement occupational health and safety standards and recognise them as fundamental rights.

A world that leaves no one behind holds companies to account, ensures labour protection for all workers and considers health and safety at work a fundamental right!
