#Timefor8: the clock is ticking for a New Social Contract         Issue 5 / 2022 -  Sign Up

Dear,

Covid-19 confirmed what we already knew: universal social protection is an essential building block of resilient societies.

Despite the recent experience of the pandemic and strong evidence showing that societies with strong social protection are more resilient to the impact of the pandemic, coverage for social protection remains low worldwide.

More than half of the world’s population is totally uncovered by social protection measures, a majority of whom are informal workers. Women suffer the most from this situation as they hold most of the jobs in the informal economy.

In five weeks, we will bring to decision-makers and stakeholders meeting at the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) the call of workers to expand universal social protection to all workers by supporting the UN “Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions”. And the demand to establish a Global Social Protection Fund to support the poorest countries’ efforts to build their own sustainable social protection systems.

The UN has called for a decisive commitment from all stakeholders in this decade of action to deliver the SDGs. The 2030 Agenda reflects the world’s commitment to extending social protection as part of sustainable development strategies to build a better world, a world that leaves no one behind.

Therefore, the world must urgently

put in place universal and gender- responsive social protection systems;

reach the formalisation of at least one billion informal workers by 2030; and

governments and employers must support the expansion of social protection to all workers, and contribute to the implementation of the UN “Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions”, including the creation of a Global Social Protection Fund.
