#Timefor8: the clock is ticking for a New Social Contract      Issue 7 / 2023 -  Sign Up

Dear {{contact.firstname}},

The ITUC delegation has been very productive during the first week of the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). Our delegates have brought forth workers’ positions in no less than five major events.🤩

Jordi Musoni (CESTRAR, Rwanda) started off at the plenary session on SDG 7 that took place on 12 July. In his speech, Musoni outlined workers’ key priorities to ensure access to affordable and clean energy for all.

On the next day, 13 July, Olivier Ouedraogo (CSB, Burkina Faso), delivered a strong intervention on trade unions’ proposal to support sustainable development in African, the least developed, and landlocked developing countries.

Speaking on behalf of the Workers and Trade Unions Major Group, Paola Simonetti (ITUC) called for embracing a New Social Contract as a major shift for progress towards the 2030 Agenda and beyond at a session that was held on 14 July.

On that same day, 14 July, the first Voluntary National Reviews (VNR) were held.

Jordi Musoni
responded brilliantly to the VNR of the Government of Rwanda, and Olivier Ouedraogo provided an alternative narrative to the VNR of the Government of Burkina Faso.

Both delegates showed the HLPF that trade unions are actors of development in their own right.✌️

VOLUNTARY NATIONAL REVIEWS (VNRs 2023)

In its second week, the HLPF will be mostly focusing on the Voluntary National Reviews (VNR).

This year, 39 countries will present their VNRs.

To confront the official narrative, the ITUC and national trade union organisations in 12 countries have conducted their own research to provide an independent workers’ perspective on how their governments are delivering on the SDGs.

Each national report assesses the level of transparency, consultation, and social dialogue that governments are putting in place when planning, carrying out, and monitoring national development plans.

All national reports are compiled in the global report “A Trade Union Take on the SDGs”.
