Dear {{contact.firstname}},
The UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) begins today at 10:00 am (New York time / EDT).
Over the next two weeks, an ITUC delegation will join hundreds of representatives from governments, civil society organisations, the private sector and other stakeholders at the HLPF to discuss global sustainable development strategies and policies.
The delegation includes Fathimath Zimna (MCTU, Maldives), Jordi Musoni (CESTRAR, Rwanda), Olivier Ouedraogo (CSB, Burkina Faso), along with Paola Simonetti and Diego López from the ITUC.
Through its work, the delegation will bring forward workers’ demands on the five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are under review this year, as well as on how to accelerate action towards the 2030 Agenda in general.
Discussions will focus on the global progress needed to ensure both the availability and the sustainable management of water and sanitation (SDG 6), the provision of affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy (SDG 7), the construction of resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation (SDG 9), the task of making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable (SDG 11) and finally, the reinforcement of the means of implementation, and the revitalisation of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development (SDG 17).
ITUC President Akiko Gono emphasised the importance of working peoples’ interests being represented by trade unions within development policies and said:
“Midway to 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals are more relevant than ever to deliver a New Social Contract. The time to act is now!”
