The ITUC has welcomed the second Global Wage Report from the International Labour Organization (ILO). “Today’s report reinforces what unions around the world have been saying about the economic crisis and the policy responses that governments need to put in place,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow.
Bangladesh: ITUC protests over Police Killing of Four Striking Workers
The ITUC has protested to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over the killing of four workers protesting at the failure of garment companies supplying world markets to pay the minimum wage. Some 200 others were injured in clashes with police, who opened fire on the demonstrators at the Chittagong Economic Processing Zone on 12 December. Protests also took place in several other garment factory hubs, in the suburbs of Dhaka.
Progress on Climate and Just Transition in Cancun, But Unions Demand Greater Government Efforts on the Way To Durban
Trade unions have welcomed the final agreement reached at the UN climate conference in Cancun, one that includes trade union demands for a just transition, while calling on all governments – particularly the most developed – to raise their sights by the time of the next meeting in Durban, South Africa in one year’s time.
G20: International Union Delegation to Meet French President Sarkozy
An international delegation of trade union leaders will meet French President Nicolas Sarkozy on 13 December to press for global action on jobs, financial reform, development and action on climate change. As host of the G20 2011 Summit in France, President Sarkozy and his Ministers will have a key role in setting the G20 agenda for the next year.
Trade unions tell ASEM Labour Ministers to act on social protection and Green Jobs
On Sunday 12 December, trade unions from Asia and Europe will meet with Labour Ministers and employers’ representatives on the eve of the 3rd ASEM Labour and Employment Ministers’ Conference in Leiden, the Netherlands, on 13 and 14 December. The social partners’ consultations take place at a crucial moment as Ministers prepare to discuss the recovery from the jobs crisis and the promotion of social protection.
