The ITUC condemns the Korean government’s decision to de-register the Korean Teachers Union (KTU)

The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) condemns in the strongest terms the Korean government’s decision to de-register the Korean Teachers Union (KTU) on 24 October.

The ILO has repeatedly called on the government to respect the KTU’s right to associate, and to determine its own membership. But because the union has decided to include dismissed union members among its ranks, the government has withdrawn its legal recognition. The government also recently refused to register, for the 4th time, the Korean Government Employees Union (KGEU) for the same reason.

“The Park Administration has demonstrated in short order its anti-union credentials by attacking the fundamental rights of teachers and government workers. We call on all governments to urgently press the government to respect international law and restore the KTU’s legal status immediately”said Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary.
