One thousand delegates representing 176 million members from 155 countries and territories will take part in the Second World Congress of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). They will deal with issues related to labour’s demands for restructuring and reform of the global economy with an emphasis on workers’ rights, migrant workers, climate change and HIV-AIDS.
Canadian Prime Minister Agrees G20 Must Measure Recovery by Jobs
In a meeting today with a Global Unions delegation,
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper agreed that economic recovery would
not be achieved until the labour market had recovered, and that measures
were needed to tackle youth unemployment given its devastating impact on the many young people who had never had a good job.

The ITUC and TUAC will hold a press briefing on Tuesday 15 June from 13.30-14.30 at the Palais des Nations, Geneva (Room XI - interpretation: English, German, French and Spanish) to release the Global Unions’ Statement to the G8/G20 Ontario Summits. Speakers will include Michael Sommer, President of the Confederation of German Trade Unions, DGB and Vice-President of the ITUC; James Howard, Director of Economic and Social Policy, ITUC, and John Evans, General Secretary, TUAC. The statement will put forward a comprehensive plan for growing the global economy out of the recession.
