Syria: stop the state-organized massive murder
“For nearly five months, the Assad regime has been massacring its own population and in recent days the massive military assault in several cities is a horrifying confirmation of the total illegitimacy of this regime and its denial of any tiny bit of humanity”, said Sharan Burrow, ITUC general secretary. “The ITUC welcomes the UN Security Council’s statement condemning human rights violations and the use of force against civilians. The ITUC urges the international community to take action now to ensure that more peaceful protestors and others civilians are not killed. Concerted international action is needed now, in coming hours. As each hour passes, the results are more violence, repression and deaths”, she added.
Guatemala: Two More Women Workers Killed
The delegates at the II Conference against Impunity in Guatemala, convened by the ITUC and its Guatemalan affiliates and held from 21 to 22 July in Guatemala City, have condemned and expressed grave concern at the killings of two women, members of the national front for the defence of public services and natural resources, FNL, who have paid with their lives for their outstanding commitment to the fight waged alongside the Guatemalan people.
Malawi: Eighteen People Killed in Bloody Repression of Peaceful Protests
On Friday 29 July, the ITUC wrote to the president of Malawi to strongly protest the bloody repression of peaceful protests in various cities of the southern African country on 20 and 21 July. Indiscriminate violence from the authorities led to the death of 18 people.
ITUC Deeply Disturbed by Decision of Thai Labour Court
The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) denounces the decision of the Thai Labour Court which upheld management’s right to dismiss seven officers of the State Railway Workers’ Union of Thailand (SRUT) for their part in a safety-related industrial action two years ago. The court further allowed a fine of 15 million Thai Baht ( 353,000 €).
Continuing Violations of Workers’ Rights in Egypt
In its latest report to the World Trade Organisation’s periodic Trade Policy Review, the International Trade Union Confederation condemns vicious violations of the right to organise and freedom of association in Egypt.
