ILO Condemns Fiji Junta over Labour Rights
The UN’s International Labour Organisation has issued a strong condemnation of Fiji’s military Junta over severe violations of labour rights. The ILO’s Committee on Freedom of Association described the situation there as “extremely serious” and requiring urgent attention.

The ITUC, the Building and Wood Workers International and the Swiss Union Unia met with FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke at FIFA headquarters today, to inform him that unless Qatar upholds labour rights, the international trade union movement will campaign against the 2022 World Cup being held there.

The international trade union movement has added its support to the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, for the day of action planned on 17 November in the US and several other countries.

While this year’s APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Hawaii lauded their region as providing “the vanguard for global growth…. performing beyond even the most optimistic expectations” it said nothing about the need for strong government measures to achieve economic recovery, establish a fairer trading system, invest in decent jobs or strengthen social protection.
Ecuador: New ITUC Report Reveals Discrimination and Labour Rights Abuses
A new ITUC report on core labour standards in Ecuador, published on the occasion of the World Trade Organisation (WTO)’s review of Ecuador’s trade policies, reveals grave problems with trade union rights and discrimination and several other violations of labour rights.
