International Union Leaders in Davos Welcome Sarkozy G20 Commitments on Jobs, Financial Regulation and Tax
Leaders of international trade union bodies at the Davos World Economic Forum meeting this week have welcomed the strong emphasis placed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy on tackling global unemployment and poverty, regulating the financial sector and introducing a financial transactions tax, in his speech to the Forum today. President Sarkozy, who currently chairs the G20 group, also insisted on stronger action against tax havens.
Tunisia: ITUC Calls for End to Attacks on UGTT
The offices of the UGTT in six Tunisian towns have been attacked. The ITUC is launching an appeal for an immediate end to the violence against the UGTT.
Egypt: ITUC condemns police repression against peaceful demonstrators
Tens of thousands of peaceful demonstrators were protesting today in the capital of Cairo, as in many other Egyptian cities including Alexandria, Aswan, Mahallah, Ismailiya. As in Tunisia, they are demanding social and political reforms, blaming corruption, poverty, high prices and police brutality.
Jobs Not Deficits Should Be Davos Priority
The union movement has issued a statement for this week’s World Economic Forum in Davos: “Labour’s main message is that policymakers must stay focused on stimulating enough economic demand to achieve full employment. The ultimate solution to government budget deficits is more employment, higher wages and hence increased tax revenue.”
Tunisia: ITUC Reaffirms Its Support for the UGTT and Calls for Genuine Democratic Transition
The International Trade Union Confederation reiterates its total support for its Tunisian affiliate the UGTT and the Tunisian people in their struggle for the establishment of true democracy after the fall of the dictatorship of the deposed president, Ben Ali.
