Colombia: Third Education Trade Unionist Assassinated in 2011
The ITUC, together with its Colombian affiliates CUT, CGT and CTC, has firmly condemned the murder of Carlos Alberto Ayala, director of the Caucasia Rural Education Institute and a member of the Putumayo Teachers’ Association, ASEP. The teacher was killed by gunmen who laid in wait for him as he made his way home on 5 February.
Zimbabwean Union Leader Wellington Chibebe Elected ITUC Deputy General Secretary
The ITUC General Council meeting in Brussels last week unanimously elected Zimbabwean trade union leader Wellington Chibebe to the position of Deputy General Secretary of the global trade union body. Chibebe, 47, will complete his current term as General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and will join ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow and Deputy General Secretary Jaap Wienen as a full-time elected official after the ZCTU Congress later this year.

Unions Mobilise Worldwide for Democracy in Egypt
Trade unions from all four corners of the world took part in today’s Day of Action for Democracy in Egypt following a decision by the ITUC General Council. The trade unions organised demonstrations outside Egyptian embassies and pressed their governments to demand democratic transition in Egypt and guarantees that those responsible for the violent repression of peaceful demonstrations be brought to justice.
