Morocco: Trade Unionists Brutally Attacked

The ITUC has firmly condemned the violent attacks suffered by trade unionists during a demonstration held by the trade union confederation Confédération démocratique du travail (CDT) in Ourzazate on Saturday 12 January.

According to the reports received by the ITUC, the police staged a brutal assault, clubbing demonstrators who had gathered for a sit-in. The demonstrators were protesting against the unfair dismissals of over 300 people from the Beler Karam Palace and Iminish Karak hotels and the Ozagar mining site.

Several people were injured in the attack, including Omar Ouboho, the general secretary of the local union.

"We cannot accept such conduct from the authorities," said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow. "Violence cannot be used to stop a peaceful and legitimate demonstration. Trade unionists must be able to fulfil their essential role and defend workers’ rights without fear for their lives and safety."
