Thousands of workers at PT Nikomas plant in Serang, Banten, were particularly happy when they were informed that the sportswear multinational Nike had agreed to compensate them with $1m for 593,468 hours of unpaid overtime over the last 2 years.
By the beginning of February the whole amount should be provided to them. The out of court decision negotiated between Nike and the SPN trade union (affiliated to TWARO/ITGLWF) also includes setting up a taskforce that would address workers’problems and develop training programmes. The arrangement does not cover all the unpaid extra hours. Indeed this practice has taken place over the last 18 years but the law only allows to claim for this right for the last 2 years. However, this is a significant victory. It is clear that forced and unpaid overtime working is commonplace in the sportswear industry and that workers in the supply chains of all of the major global brands face similar exploitation at work. Workers also are paid poverty wages, work excessive hours and are often denied many other of their rights at work.
The SPN trade union has pledged that this successful negotiation is only a first step in their fight to secure justice for all garment and textile workers in Indonesia.
( PT Nikomas plant was not located as such in an EPZ. However, this case brings hopes to thousands of workers all around the world, particularly for EPZ workers where major textile and sportswear companies operate and where extra hours are still too often unpaid)
