The ITUC has expressed deep concern over moves to install Bahrain’s Shaik Salman as President of FIFA. Salman has been accused by Bahraini human rights defenders of complicity in the detention and torture of footballers and other athletes in the bloody crackdown launched by Bahrain’s rulers in 2011.

 

Frontlines” campaigns on three main global issues in 2016 – Climate Justice and Industrial Transformation, Taming Corporate Power in Supply Chains and Eliminating Slavery – were endorsed at the 15th meeting of the ITUC General Council in São Paulo last week.

 

Trade unions have welcomed some of the practical steps taken by the G7 Employment and Development Ministers at their meeting in Berlin on 12-13 October to implement the G7 Leaders Summit commitment from June to work towards ensuring “responsible supply chains.”

 

Trade unions have celebrated with the UGTT, one of the partners of the National Dialogue Quartet awarded the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize for a peaceful transition to a democratic future in Tunisia.

 

The Zimbabwean government has come under attack from trade unions and business groups for fast-tracking labour reforms which ignore the contributions of Zimbabwe’s social partners.
