’Decent Work and Migration’ workshop

The ’Decent Work and Migration’ workshop organised by the CUT, CGIL and CDHIC, held in São Paulo on 5-6 November, was an excellent opportunity for the main trade union organisations of Italy and Brazil to share experiences on migration.
Some of the immigrants here in Brazil spoke about their working conditions, the discrimination and violence they face and, finally, their complicated relations with the bureaucracy. A number of studies were then presented, exposing the living conditions of the various migrant communities and the contradictions contained in the legislation inherited from the military dictatorship, whereby immigration is viewed as a threat to national security rather than as a human right.
The information shared will help trade unions to identify new strategies for representing and extending migrant workers’ rights.
