New publication: Social Dialogue to achieve the SDGs
 
 
The Trade Union Development Cooperation Network (TUDCN) has produced a series of four country briefs on the role that social dialogue plays in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. More specifically, the research explores how social dialogue has contributed to the formalisation of the informal economy in Argentina, Costa Rica, Kenya and the Philippines.

Sharan Burrow: “The future is in our hands”


ITUC-CSI General Secretary, Sharan Burrow talks about the future of work and the role of the SDGs as a tool that shows the way to a zero poverty, zero carbon world. The political courage to implement them fully is still not there, however “85 per cent of the world’s people do want rules of the global economy changed”.
TUDCN Open Coordination Meeting 2018


The Trade Union Development Cooperation Network (TUDCN) held the fifth issue of its annual Open Coordination Meeting (OCM) in Brussels on 3 and 4 October. In addition to sharing updates on the work achieved at global and regional level, participants discussed the next strategic steps the network will take on a series of topics central to the activities of the network.

Over 15 representatives of trade unions and solidarity support organisations (SSOs) met in Bangkok, Thailand on 19-20 June 2018 to review, strengthen and coordinate international cooperation initiatives.

Comisiones Obreras published Spain’s first trade union report on SDGs
Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) has issued a report to showcase how the organisation incorporates the 2030 Agenda in its every day work. Entitled “From discourse to action in CCOO”, the report gathers CCOO’s proposals and activities in the frame of trade unions’ priority SDGs.

UGT Brasil organised photo exhibition to mark 3rd anniversary of the SDGs
Displayed in strategic public places to reach as many people as possible, this exhibition was a proof of UGT Brasil’s strong commitment to raising awareness on the Agenda 2030 and to working towards reaching its 17 SDGs and their 169 targets.

Chad: Trade unions stress own priorities at government workshop on inclusion of SDGs in national development plan

Demba Karyom (Union of Chad’s Trade Unions) brought forward union’s development priorities during the workshop that was organised by the Ministry of Economy and Development Planning to contextualise and prioritise the SDG targets that will be included in the next revision of the five-year national development plan.
Nepal: Trade unions promote social security as a means to achieve the Agenda 2030

Trade Unions, including the Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC), were central to produce the draft legislation on a contribution based social security for Nepal. Now they urge the government to start implementing the law as soon as possible and organise aware raising campaigns to inform affiliates and society in general on this law and its link to the SDGs.

UNCTAD Trade and Development report 2018 - "Power, Platforms and the Free Trade Delusion"
In this new report, the UN Conference on Trade And Development (UNCTAD) criticises the negative impact of private sector involvement in infrastructure planning in developing countries. Infrastructure planning in these countries needs to shift from private investors’ short-term hunt for profit to focusing on how infrastructure can enhance structural, economic and social transformation in the developing world.

This report gives an in-depth, evidence-based analysis of the impact of ten Private Public Partnerships (PPP) projects that have taken place across four continents, in both developed and developing countries. 2018 SDG Index and Dashboards report
The Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network have published the 2018 SDG Index and Dashboards report, which presents a revised and updated assessment of countries’ distance to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also provides a ranking of countries by the aggregate SDG Index of overall performance.
