Policies Trade union
response to the EC Communication on CSOs in development
In
response to the recent European Commission’s Communication ‘The roots of
democracy and sustainable development: Europe’s engagement with Civil Society
in external relations’ trade unions welcome the document and its recognition
of the role of the civil society with the particular mention of social
partners and social dialogue as well as the Commission’s commitment to
supporting regional and global networks and ensuring timely and inclusive
policy dialogues. Trade unions welcome also the recognition of the role of Development
Education as a means of strengthening public accountability of the EU
external action. Policies Trade unions
react to the EC Communication on social protection in development
ITUC
and ETUC warmly welcomed the new EC Communication “Social Protection in
European Union Development Cooperation” and its evolved understanding of
social protection, with references to the relevant ILO recommendations. Trade
unions appreciate also the recognition of the role of social partners in the
elaboration and implementation of social protections schemes. Concerns remain
however around the role of Corporate Social Responsibility in this domain. Policies ITUC’s reaction to the World Bank’s report on
jobs
Responding
to the launch today of the World Bank’s World Development Report 2013,
devoted to the theme of “Jobs”, ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow welcomed
the publication as recognition by the world’s largest development institution
that it must focus on employment creation as a priority goal. News from the network Trade unions’ views on working with donor
governments in development – a new study from the TUDCN
The new
TUDCN Development Paper outlines trade unions’ experience with the governmental
support systems for development cooperation in 18 countries. The study,
carried out by the HIVA Institute offers also a number of policy
recommendations, both to the donors and to the trade unions on how to improve
the effectiveness of these support mechanisms. News from the network Social Protection Floors – Lifting People out of
Poverty
In an
interview for the European Development Days website ITUC Secretary General
Sharan Burrow stresses the importance of social protection in development and
outlines the means of implementation of social protection floors. Burrow
talks also about the role of social partners in establishing social protection
schemes and her perspective on the EU role in supporting social protection in
poorer countries. News from the network ITUC page on the Post-2015
Development Framework process launched
A
dedicated page on the ITUC website has been launched to keep the ITUC
affiliates as well as external visitors informed about the UN Post-2015
Development Framework process and the ITUC inputs, reactions and plans in
that respect. You can already access the first news and documents, including
the Guide for trade union engagement in the post-2015 development framework
process and soon the report from the recent trade union seminar on that
topic. News from the network CFDT/
Institut Belleville and International Labour Office
publish guide for migrants
The
CFDT and the International Labour Office (ILO) have published an information
guide for migrant workers, whether legal or illegal, which came out on 13
September, to help them learn more about their rights. News from the network TUCA’s Training School Network and virtual
courses
Through
the Training School Network, the TUCA is launching a process to articulate
and coordinate trade union training on continental level. The characteristics
of the network are to be a “virtual classroom” for learning, an educational
“resource centre” and a “forum for interaction”. The objective is to train
leaders and facilitators to develop alternative thinking, to facilitate the
development of proposals to strengthen the trade union movement so that it
can contribute to the building of a new society based on sustainability and
democracy with decent work as the driving force of this new development
model. News from the network Is DFID allergic to Decent Work?
Nearly
everyone agrees a decent job is the best way for someone to escape poverty.
So why is the Department for International Development (DFID) doing so little
to help? Read the new TUC report “A decent job” and the blog post on this
topic by TUC Ben Moxham. News from the network Haïti - successful mobilisation on
October 5th.
Following
the call for action launched by the ITUC and TUCA on the occasion of the
Global Day of Action for Decent Work, Haitian trade unions took the streets
of Port au Prince to insist on genuine decent work policies. More than 2000
people demonstrated and demanded the government to respond to worker’s urgent
demands, as defined in the trade union roadmap. A video highlights the main
moments of that day. |
