Policies UN
Development Cooperation Forum – development cooperation in the times of
crisis
On July
5-6 2012 the UN Development Cooperation Forum will gather for the third time
at their bi-annual session in New York. The forum, taking place just two
weeks after the ‘Rio+20’ Summit, will discuss how to advance sustainable
development through development cooperation, on the top of its usual focus on
the current trends in quantity, quality and allocation of aid and development
cooperation. Another important topic will be the post-2015 global development
framework. TUDCN coordinates the trade union delegation to the event. Policies Social
Dialogue: ‘unearthed’ strategic objective of EU development cooperation?
The
European Commission has organised a seminar specifically centred on the role
of social dialogue in development. The event took place on May 25 with the
participation of the international and European social partner organizations
and the presence of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Policies Development Education and Awareness Raising:
does it matter for trade unions?
On 22nd
of May, at the EU Parliament session in Strasbourg, a round table titled “Do
Europeans care for the rest of the world?” took place, hosted by the Polish
MEP Filip Kaczmarek. The
debate, facilitated by the DARE Forum, focused on the coincidence between
“solidarity” and “mutual interest” in a globalised world. The roundtable was
followed by a call for the MEPs to sign the Development Education and
Awareness Raising (DEAR) Declaration and for the European Commission to
increase the funds available for DEAR. Policies Aid
effectiveness criteria in the EU development cooperation programming process:
what role for trade unions?
During
the first meeting of the EU Policy Forum in May, the European External Action
Service (EEAS) and DEVCO officials finally presented the EU development
cooperation programming modalities (stating how to spend development
cooperation budget), that will be applied from 2014 to 2020. It is
interesting to note that the programming process was launched long before the
very approval of the development cooperation instruments that are currently
going through the EU legislative procedure. News from the Network Trade Union Nordic Development Cooperation
meeting
“To
restore confidence, creating quality jobs, decent work must be the core of
any legitimate policy of economic and financial reform and any strategy for
growth… Norway has a rights-based approach to the decent work; we believe
this approach is even more vital in times of crisis… Participation and
dialogue must be at the centre of the recovery”, Jonas Gahr
Støre, Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, told
the participants from Global Unions and the Nordic Solidarity Support
organisations at the Trade Union Nordic Development Cooperation meeting that
took place near Oslo on 14-16 May 2012. News from the Network Domestic
work: dignifying the work, giving dignity to the workers
Very
young women, migrants from the rural areas, with little education and minimum
self-esteem sometimes with family responsibilities and unaware of their
labour rights. Unaware even of their status as employees, thousands of women
workers in Bolivian homes become easy prey for unscrupulous employers,
subjected to a state of semi-slavery, with no fixed working hours, no pay and
virtually no rest. News from the Network Yes, the money is there!
Spanish
Alliance Against Poverty find way of avoiding social cuts in the general
state budgets. News from the Network TUC Aid Project mobilizes support
for the ILO Recommendation on HIV in Nigeria
The
National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is mobilizing
support for the implementation of the ILO Recommendation on HIV/AIDS and the
World of Work adopted by the International Labour Conference in June 2010. News from the Network Fair
Games? Not for workers making sportswear
for the Olympics
In the
run up to London 2012, the Play Fair campaign has found exploitative working conditions in 10 factories making Olympic
goods and sportswear in China, the Philippines and Sri Lanka. This has to
change. Acting together, we can demand that the Olympic Movement and sportswear
industry do much more to ensure that the human rights of workers making their
goods are respected. News from the Network John Carlos, Olympic legend talks about his
fight for justice and supporting Playfair 2012
John
Carlos met with representatives of the TUC and Playfair
2012 campaign as he toured the UK speaking about his ongoing
fight for justice and why we need to stand together and speak out against
injustice at the local and global levels. News from the Platforms Consultations on CPDE – the new global CSO
platform for the post-Busan process launched. What
place for the trade unions?
In
response to the official process coming out of the Busan
High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness and the emerging Global Partnership for
Effective Development Cooperation, CSOs from all regions and sectors are
working together to create a new platform to replace BetterAid
and Open Forum that represented civil society in the Busan
process. Consultations on the final shape of the CSO Partnership for
Development Effectiveness (CPDE) are kicking off in all regions and sectors. |
