HLP report on the Post-2015 Development Framework - Business … as usual
The HLP released its report at the end of May, after a “lengthy and broad consultation” process.
The Trade Union movement welcomes the tone of the report when it comes to setting the desired outcomes and expressing the ambition to challenge some of the major obstacles to sustainable development.
The option to consider the world as one and address development objectives as relevant for all societies and people is clearly a step forward, considering the scope of the previous generation of MDGs.
However, upon reaching the HLPs recommendations, illustrative goals and proposed concrete targets, fundamental shortcomings and ideological bias emerge.
In the preliminary opinion, that is now open for discussion by the Trade Union Development Cooperation Network, a number of specifics are at the heart of our concerns as workers and trade unions: decent work, social protection, social dialogue and democratic ownership.

EU’s support to private sector development: focus on poverty reduction and job creation is needed
An April seminar on the “Evaluation of the European Union’s support to private sector development in third countries” showed that much more needs to be done to maximise the impact of EU money on the ground, since linkages between EU support to private sector development and poverty reduction and job creation remain very distant.

In all, the conference counted nearly 120 participants from 84 organisations working in the development cooperation sector (NGDOs), coming from both old and new member states of the European Union. The Fair successfully created an arena for all of these NGDO representatives to learn, network, find partners, create joint projects and work on project proposals that are to be submitted to the European Commission in the course of the coming call on Development Education.

Supporting Worker Participation in Factories in Vietnam
Some of us (and this definitely includes me) have sweated bitter hours over flat-pack furniture. However, it’s fair to say that fitting together even the most fiendish collection of wood pieces into a double bed is child’s play compared to actually working in the factories that produced it.

Pacific Growth and Employment Project (PGEP)
The latest progress chart on the Millennium Development Goals indicates a large to very large decent work deficit in Oceania. Progress is insufficient to reach the MDG target if prevailing trends persist. The opportunity to earn a living wage, in a secure job where you are treated with respect and dignity remains a challenge in Oceania. In recognition of this challenge, the Pacific Growth and Employment Project (PGEP) was developed.

Quote from Gemma Freedman (former TUC)
"Did great interview just now with PSI's sub-regional Secretary for South Asia. He explained how through an LOTCO/PSI project, a union in India managed to get improved wages, terms and conditions (including recruitment of 28,000 new workers) for amazing child care workers who were earning just 2,500 Rupees a month (£30!) for caring for 30+ children (and sometimes were stretched to work in two child care centres in one day!) and their mothers in some of the poorest villages in Tamil Nadu seven days a week. They now earn up to 7,500 a month, have a small pension, get sunday's of work and other benefits. They are also campaign for the buildings (rudimentary) which house the children during the day to be upgraded. They are still not receiving enough remuneration for their exhausting and incredible work bringing up the nation’s children but it's a great improvement. This is just one example of the fabulous work of trade unions all over the world! Inspirational !"
