ITUC meets the EU Commissioner on Development

On September 6th 2011 Andris Piebalgs, the EU Commissioner on Development, met with Sharan Burrow, the Secretary General of ITUC. Sharan Burrow took that opportunity to thank the Commissioner for the increased support to trade unions and to discuss the social aspects of European development cooperation policies and in particular the inclusion of the Social Protection Floor in the European development cooperation strategies. Trade Union Principles and Guidelines on Development Effectiveness

Trade Union Principles and Guidelines on Development Effectiveness is the first of the TUDCN Development Paper series. It presents the vision and values of trade union organisations on Development Effectiveness in a form of Principles and Guidelines, elaborated on a consultative basis by trade union organisation from both the Global North and the Global South. Trade union contributions to the European policies on development

A number of important political processes around the issues of development cooperation policies and programmes have been taking place over the last months at the European institutions level. The most relevant are represented by thethe Structured Dialogue on development effectiveness (led by the EC), the consultations launched by the EC on the Green Paper on Development Policy and on the Multiannual Financial Framework (2014-2020). To feed to these processes TUDCN has formulated the Trade Union Key Messages on EU Development Cooperation and Human Rights Policies as well as more detailed statements for each of the processes. BetterAid - on the road to Busan

With the High Level Forum of Aid Effectiveness in Busan only a couple of months away, the work of the BetterAid platform has been gathering speed. Publication of the Draft Outcome Document for Busan triggered a lively discussion during the meeting of the OECD Working Party on Aid Effectiveness in July in Paris and has resulted in publishing an elaborate statement of BetterAid after an intense exchange of perspectives within the platform. Global Assembly of the Open Forum for CSO Development Effectiveness

Some 230 delegates of Civil Society Organisations from over 70 countries gathered in Siem Reap, Cambodia in June 2011 endorsing the International Framework for CSO Development Effectiveness. TUDCN representatives from ITUC-AP region were also there. Read more >>>

CSOs Forum and the IV UN-LDCs Conference

The forum theme was “Towards a world without LDCs” and it is the first time the UN organised a Conference asking for the official presence and contribution of the Civil Society, fact that was welcomed by the CSOs. The CSO track of the Conference was particularly rich in sessions and different issues raised and analysed. The participation from LDCs was strong, and some CSOs from ‘development partners’ countries were also present. The ITUC delegation was composed of representatives from African LDCs, including ITUC Africa, one from an Asian LDC, two staff from ITUC in Brussels, as well as 2 representatives from DISK Turkey. TUDCN General Meeting, 20-22 June 2011

The General Meeting of TUDCN in June 2011 in Brussels was the first of four General Meetings in the coming two years of the second TUDCN project. It was an opportunity to summarize the achievements of the TUDCN I and discuss the current issues of the network, including the policy approach for the HLF in Busan, capacity building in the network and the upcoming events. Twelve projects to strengthen free trade unionism around the world

In 2010, the Institut Belleville devoted 275 000 euros to its solidarity action with trade unions in emerging and developing countries. It conducted twelve projects in Africa, South America, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Read more >>>

Sixty trade unionists from across the globe, including representatives from Africa, Latin America and South Korea, along with representatives from Europe and North America, met at the OECD in Paris for three day-long consultations (8-10 March 2011) on the theme of Development Effectiveness.
