ITUC Welcomes UN Social Protection Report
The ITUC has welcomed the recommendations of a new report “Social Protection Floor for a Fair and Inclusive Globalization”, presented this week to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon by former President of Chile and UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet, and ILO Director General Juan Somavia.
Libya: The Road Ahead
With the formal “declaration of liberation” by Libya’s interim leaders on 22 October, the enormous task of building a democratic and just society, and an economy which delivers decent work and economic security for Libyans and foreign workers alike, can begin. The interim authorities, and the international community, bear a heavy responsibility to ensure that the legitimate aspirations of the people are fully realised, in line with international standards and the rule of law.
Guatemala: workers’ rights blatantly violated
Workers in Guatemala are once again faced with the blatant violation of their rights. The ITUC has joined with its Guatemalan affiliates, the CUSG, CGTG and UNSITRAGUA, in once again denouncing the violation of workers’ rights in the municipality of San José El Rodeo, department of San Marcos, and in the municipality of Puerto Barrios, department of Izabal, where wages and holidays dating back to 2008 are owed to over 400 municipal employees.
Widespread Abuse of Workers’ Rights
More than a quarter of countries represented at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth this week have failed to allow basic industrial rights for workers, the ACTU said today.
