G20 Finance Ministers Risk Tipping Global Economy Back Into Recession
Global Unions have attacked the outcome of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Busan, Korea, on 5 June. “The G20 Finance Ministers said they were meeting at a ‘critical juncture’ to secure global recovery and address economic challenges and risks” said ITUC General Secretary Guy Ryder. “They have failed on both counts. Their decisions risk undermining recovery, whilst they have failed to move forward the agenda for re-regulating financial markets.”
World Cup Soccer Balls: Exploitation Still the Norm
As the frenzy grows over the upcoming FIFA World Cup in South Africa, there is a part of the World Cup that won’t be broadcast on TV. Trade Unions Warn G20 Finance Ministers Against Inaction
Brussels, 4 June 2010: As G20 Finance ministers and central bankers meet in Busan, Korea, on June 4-5, 2010, with proposals to introduce new taxes on banks and other financial institutions high on their agenda, trade unions are calling for a firm and comprehensive G20 agreement to re-regulate global finance, including the introduction of a financial transaction tax.
Colombia: No Change in Routine of Threatening and Eliminating Trade Unionists
Violence is becoming totally routine in Colombia. Once again, the ITUC, together with its regional organisation for the Americas, TUCA, and its Colombian affiliates, the CUT, CGT and CTC, have strongly condemned and expressed their deepest concern over the murders of Leslien Torcoroma Peñaranda Blanco and Francisco Atonio Abello Rebollo, and the threats levelled against Daíro Rúa, branch president of the mining and energy workers’ union SINTRAMIENERGETICA, affiliated to CUT.
Israel: Killings at Sea an Outrage
The ITUC condemns the killing of as many as 19 persons in a boat convoy headed for Gaza today, and the wounding of many more, as an outrage. A full, open and independent enquiry is needed to establish the precise details of what took place when Israeli soldiers boarded vessels in the convoy, which was organised to bring supplies to Gaza. Those responsible for violations of international law must be brought to justice.
