East African Network for Human and Trade Union Rights to Meet in Rwanda
As the East African Community (EAC) is a creating a common market, the East African HTUR network, established last July in Nairobi as part of the ITUC HTUR programme, will meet in Kigali on 6 and 7 October to debate about the integration of a clause on human and trade union rights in the Common Market Protocol of the EAC.
Global Unions call on IFIs to reject austerity programmes and focus on job creation
Concerned by the faltering pace of global economic recovery, which has yet to produce a real recovery for millions of workers and unemployed men and women, the ITUC and its Global Unions partners have called upon the 2010 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the IMF to reject austerity programmes and to support job-focused stimulus measures and investments in quality public services to assist in the global economic recovery.
Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali: Persistence of child labour and human trafficking
The ITUC is releasing today a report on core labour standards in the countries of Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali, coinciding with the Trade Policy Review of the three countries at the WTO. The report finds poor compliance with international labour standards, especially with regard to child labour and gender equality.
Trade Unions Call on ASEM to Act on Burma
Trade unions from across Asia and Europe, gathered in Brussels for the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Leaders’ Summit, are calling on ASEM Leaders to take action on Burma, including demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and the ending of attacks on the civilian population, particularly ethnic communities and democracy supporters.
Trade Unions Demand Equal Consultation Rights In Asia-Europe Process
In a trade union summit held in Brussels today, 80 trade union representatives from the 46 member countries of ASEM (the Asia-Europe Meetings) are discussing trade union objectives for the ASEM VIII Leaders’ Summit (4-5 October 2010, Brussels). Trade unions are presenting their Statement to the host of the ASEM Summit, Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, at a meeting on 4 October.
